At King Law, protecting our clients and our community goes beyond the courtroom. Recently, the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office issued warnings about an increase in jury duty scam calls targeting residents in our state.
How the Scam Works- Scammers are posing as deputies from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, claiming that the recipient has missed jury duty and faces arrest unless they immediately pay a fine. These calls are designed to create fear and urgency. The scammers may even know personal details about you to make their threats sound more convincing.
What You Need to Know
- Law enforcement will never call to demand payment in exchange for avoiding arrest.
- Fines are never collected by phone or email for missed jury duty.
- Gift cards or cryptocurrency requests are a red flag—that’s a sure sign of a scam.
- If you get a suspicious call, hang up immediately and call your local sheriff’s office to confirm.
- To report a scam, contact the NC Department of Justice at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or file a complaint at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint.
