If you have a court date in Knox County, figuring out where to park for Knox County Court shouldn’t add to your stress. Whether you’re appearing for a divorce, child custody hearing, criminal case, probate matter, or another legal proceeding, knowing where to park before you arrive can make your day go much more smoothly.
Downtown Knoxville offers several parking garages and metered street parking, but availability, cost, and walking distance vary. Planning ahead can help ensure you arrive on time and avoid unnecessary frustration.
Where Is the Knox County Courthouse?
Many Knox County court proceedings take place at the Knoxville City County Building, located at 400 Main Street, Knoxville, TN 37902.
The building houses Criminal Court, General Sessions Criminal Court, Fourth Circuit Court, Juvenile Court (certain proceedings), and various Knox County Clerk offices. Before leaving for court, review your summons, subpoena, notice, or court paperwork to confirm the correct courthouse and courtroom.
Best Parking Option for the City County Building
One of the most convenient options is the Dwight Kessel Garage, located at 900 State Street. It is approximately a 2–3 minute walk from the City County Building.
Current parking rates:
• $1 per half hour
• $7 daily maximum
Its close proximity makes it an excellent choice for court appearances, and Knox County often directs grand jurors to use this garage when parking validation is available.
Other Parking Garages Near Knox County Court
Locust Street Garage – 540 Locust Street ($1/hour; $7 daily maximum)
State Street Garage – 500 State Street ($1/hour; $7 daily maximum)
Riverview Tower Garage – 900 S. Gay Street ($4/hour; $10 daily maximum).
Can You Park on the Street?
Yes. Metered street parking is available throughout downtown Knoxville. It may be suitable for short visits such as filing documents or visiting the Clerk’s Office, but parking garages are generally a better option for court appearances because hearings often last longer than expected.
Make Sure You’re Going to the Correct Building
Not every Knox County legal matter is heard in the City County Building. The Old Knox County Courthouse, located at 300 Main Street, houses the County Clerk’s Office for services such as marriage licenses, passport applications, notary services, and vehicle registration. The Tennessee Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee are also located downtown in separate buildings.
Accessible Parking
Accessible parking is available along Hill Avenue near the City County Building and along Main Street near the Old Knox County Courthouse. Always check posted signs for any applicable time restrictions.
Arrive Early for Your Court Date
Downtown traffic, parking availability, courthouse security, and elevator wait times can all cause delays. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled court appearance.
